Methodology
How Roxxi works
Roxxi provides product intelligence; not health advice, safety guarantees, or recommendations. Everything Roxxi shows is sourced, dated, and confidence-rated.
What Roxxi is
Roxxi is a consumer intelligence app for packaged grocery products. Point the camera at a barcode and Roxxi shows you what it found: ingredient notes, recall record checks, and source-verified nutrition data. Roxxi describes what stands out about a product. It does not score, rank, or recommend.
Product data
Roxxi pulls product data from Open Food Facts, a free, collaborative food product database. Data includes product name, brand, ingredient list, and nutrition facts where reported. Roxxi caches this data locally and refreshes it periodically.
Because Open Food Facts is crowdsourced, fields may be missing or incomplete. Roxxi shows a Data Confidence level on every result to reflect this. Missing nutrition fields show as "Data unavailable" — never as zero.
Data from Open Food Facts is used under the Open Database License (ODbL). See openfoodfacts.org.
Recall records
Roxxi checks two official sources for recall and enforcement information, updated daily:
- openFDA — U.S. FDA food enforcement reports
- USDA/FSIS — U.S. Department of Agriculture recall and public health alerts
Recall matching is conservative. Because official recall records are not keyed by barcode, Roxxi uses normalized brand and product term matching. A positive result reads: "Potential match, verify with [official source]" and links directly to the source record. A negative result reads: "No matching recall found in checked sources as of [date]." Roxxi never asserts that a product is recalled or that it is not recalled.
Ingredient Watchlist
The Roxxi Ingredient Watchlist is a curated set of additives and ingredients that consumers commonly ask about. Each entry is manually reviewed and includes official regulatory status, evidence strength, and neutral context. The Watchlist is not a list of ingredients to avoid, it surfaces information consumers track, with sources.
Evidence Strength & Data Confidence
Every result includes two transparency indicators:
Evidence Strength describes the quality of the underlying data source for a given note:
Data Confidence reflects how complete and verified the overall product record is:
Freshness
Every result includes timestamps for when the product data was last updated, when recall sources were last checked, and the version of the Ingredient Watchlist used. Recall data refreshes daily. Product data refreshes every 30–90 days, or when an admin makes a correction.

- Roxxi does not give nutrition, dietary, or medical advice
